Who was Howard Carter?
Dr. dig responds:
Howard Carter was an Egyptologist. He was born in England around 1873. He is famous for his discovery in 1922 of King Tutankhamun's tomb in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. The tomb consisted of of several chambers filled with treasure of enormous historical significance. The removal of these objects took ten years. Howard Carter died in London on March 2, 1939.
Carter's diary is in the archive of the Griffith's Institute of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. It is a disappointing document because it contains little record of the day-to-day account of his excavations. It seems, in fact, that no daily record was kept, which is surprising, because Carter, an artist and draftsman, was trained in archaeological method under the great British archaeologist, Flinders Petrie, and should have known better.
