Is there ancient history in the U.S. like that in Egypt?
Dr. dig responds:
People have inhabited the region of the United States since about 15,000 B.C. but most of the early advancements in civilization--comparable in the minds of many to the wonders of Egypt--such as the development of cities, religious ritual, art, architecture and writing happened mostly in the Central and South America.
The peoples of North America were primarily hunter-gatherers and moved around from place to place following the migratory patterns of the herds of animals, such as bison, which gave them meat to survive. These peoples were not builders of great cities and they have left little evidence for archaeologists to discover.
Some consider that the first great civilization of North America was the Hopewell culture in the eastern woodlands which arose around 300 B.C. The Hopewell people organized chiefdoms, built impressive burial mounds, created beautiful artwork, and developed a long distance trade network.
